  • The episode is likely based on the Maltese Falcon, a famous book by Dashell Hammett, later made into a movie with Humphrey Bogart; the statue arriving by ship and trio of crooks after it only adds to it.
  • This is the second episode set in Cabot Cove in which Jessica barely appears, with Grady doing most of the legwork; the first was Crossed Up.
  • Sheriff Metzger confronts the killer and exposes them, instead of Jessica for the first time.
  • Guest star Raymond Bieri is best known for his role as Capt. Frank Browning on Magnum P.I. (which crossed over with MSW in the episode Magnum on Ice).
  • Michael Horton & guest star David Warner would later work together on The Legend of Prince Valiant (1991) cartoon series.
