Before she married Noah Harwood, Miriam worked for the county. When Sybil Reed's grandmother died, Miriam told Sybil she would have to live in a foster home until she came of age even though Sybil's grandmother had left her her house and a trust fund. Sybil became deeply resentful of Miriam for this, and when she wrote her debut novel, The Sins of Castle Cove, she based the character of the unfaithful wife on Miriam as payback. Miriam was known to be having an affair with the local butcher Tim Mulligan, and when she read Sybil's novel, she recognized herself as the unfaithful wife, and became afraid of how Noah would react if he found out. Soon after, Deputy Floyd and Sheriff Metzger find Miriam dead, and Flyod, having read Sybil's book, says that Noah is responsible as that was how she died in the book. They find Noah asleep in his pickup after he got drunk and they arrest him. Eventually though, it is revealed that bookstore owner Ellis Holgate had killed Miriam because he was actually in love with her and was devastated after finding out, through the characters in Sybil Reed's book, that she couldn't stand him.
