Ellis Holgate was the owner of Cabot Cove's local bookstore and the killer of Miriam Harwood. Ellis was actually in love with Miriam and thought she felt the same way. But when he read Sybil Reed's book, The Sins of Castle Cove, he recognized the character known as "The Geek" as himself, and the character based on Miriam hated him. Devastated to learn of Miriam's true feelings for him, Ellis confronted her in her house and killed her by bashing her over the head with a frying pan. Later, Ellis told Jessica Fletcher that it was ironic that Miriam's death was just like the one in Sybil's book, but he made one critical mistake: He described the actual murder scene, not the fictional one (in the book, the Miriam character was killed with a lamp in her living room, not in her kitchen). Jessica realized this mistake when she and Seth Hazlitt were discussing the murder with Sybil. When Ellis realized he had given himself away, he said "She should have loved me! I loved her so much!", but all Jessica could do was shake her head sadly.
