Burton Hollis' family founded a successful company, until Howard Crane seized it from them. Burton tried to get revenge by killing Howard's wife Carolyn and framing him for the murder. His plan almost succeeded, but he made the mistake of revealing to Jessica Fletcher that Howard was claustrophobic, something he could only have known if he had previously known Howard, who only told his psychiatrist about his phobia.
